This early in the year you would most likely do better in the river or back channel, but if you wanted to be on the lake I would stay at the head of the lake or Bay city flats. The extended forecast doesn't show much of a warm up. There has been a huge influx of Walleyes and Saugers into the river as they are beginning to spawn. Catch yields have been up in the 70's a few days, but 40 was pretty common. May is always a really time fun to fish on the river as the weather is getting nice and the fish are really hungry after exerting all of their energy during the spawn. It was an incredible fall out on the prairie. The heavier line allows you to get your baits free of snags and the braid with a good rod allows you to feel everything that’s down on the bottom and the most subtle bites. Pitching bucktail jigs have been a good way of getting fish as well. That being said we have had a large warm spell and some areas that did have good ice now have reopened. The peak spawn is around the 15th of April. I tend not to stay and grind out one place all day. The weather soon cooled down once again and we soon gained new birds coming from the north. (Just do it at low speeds and be cautious of floating debris.) That bait is one of my favorite plastics to use in the spring when the water is stained. Fishing has been nothing short of incredible the last couple weeks on Pool 4 in the Red Wing area and Lake Pepin. The flow is coming up and the daylight hours are getting longer daily. The summer bite will continue to produce well and the panfish bite will kick off here and that will be a blast. P.S. They have cooperated well and a lot of nice fish have been netted in my boat. The fish that have been caught have resembled footballs as they are really girthy from putting on there fall weight. Overall I have been putting lots of limits of great fish in the boat. The chances of catching some of the largest weight Walleyes and Saugers of the season can be caught through mid to late April before they spawn. The area by Stockholm and the Pepin Marina are both popular ice fishing spots. Some great eaters along with some bigger ones that were released. Sometimes we need some expert advice, or we get caught out on the water later than expected. Try a few different things before you move to another spot. It was just warm enough for us to be able to drill a bunch of holes and hop around to keep on active fish. Also if you like to catch Giant Northern Pike I offer mid summer trips for those also.
