Speaking of new guitars - Jack Wagner - 11:35 11-11-05
|

I'm fairly certain the *only* thing holding me back is the fact that I
only have three guitars. I've been looking and thinking about the
fourth for the past year or so and it's just all so confusing.
For instance, I really dig these Epi Sheratons:
http://www.zzounds.com/item--EPISHER
Then again, these Agile's get rave reviews:
http://www.rondomusic.net/as820prestige.html
But I always read good crap about the Ibanez Artcores semi-hollow's
too:
http://www.zzounds.com/item--IBAAK85
And that's not even taking into consideration all the other good ones
out there, like the Sammick's etc etc etc.
I wonder which one will finally transform me from a mere mortal to the
guitar god, or, failing that, which one will get me laid more often.
Ah well, I know it gets hashed about here all the time, I just needed
to waste some time at work today.

I just bought an Epi Les Paul, but it won't get me laid or turn me into
a guitar god 'cuz it ain't a real Gibson. Ya gotta play a real Gibson
if ya wanna get laid or challenge Todd Laroc.

In case you didn't know, Samick makes all Epiphones (as well as most
guitars sold out there under different names). My own experience with
Epiphone guitars has not been good: I tried an acoustic jumbo years
ago, had to return it twice and finally bailed on it. I then
test-drove a few LP classics...hated the action. At any rate, I've
read that if you're going to buy a guitar that's made made by Samick,
get one that's sold under the Samick brand name.
I also tried a few Artcores a few months ago...didn't like the action
either. What do I like? I have a new Carvin DC200 and a 27-year old,
bolt-on El Degas LP knockoff, both of which play like buttah...

It's hard to not like the action on a Carvin :)

Oh sure, I'm hip with the whole Samick deal. Problem here is if an Epi
won't get me laid then a Samick won't even get me a back-alley handjob.
I guess I could get a Samick and paint GIBSON on the headstock, eh?
Too bad Carvin doesn't make a semi-hollow guitar, course I'm too cheap
to pay what they would likely want anyways. That said I did sign up for
their free DVD. I guess just because I won't buy one of their guitars
doesn't mean I don't want them to send me marketing stuff in the mail
all the time.

Right On.
I thought LaRoc was into Ibanez, the cat plays a Jem if I recall.
Course I'm not a shredder like he is, I'm looking for a blues box,
something that will inspire middle-aged soccer moms to throw their bras
at me and whatnot.

Might not be what you want, but have you looked at the AE185 ?

That's a perty guitar, but if I'm spending over a grand that opens the
door for many other possibilities, like a used 335 even.
No, for my purposes I can't see spendig more than $600 - $700 for a
guitar, and if I can find something I like for 3 or 4 hundred thats
even better.

Sorry, but that's not right. At least not true as late as 2000. I own
two Epiphones. NEITHER were made by Samick. BOTH were made in S. Korea.

You didn't expect them to come with a decent setup, did you?

Like I said, not all Epiphones are even made by Samick. Check the
serial numbers. If it is S. Korea with a number starting with "S", it
is Samick. If it says China :^(, it is Samick. If it starts with I or
U and says S. Korea (like my limited edition Epiphones do), it is NOT
Samick.
Also, Epiphone Samicks are different than other Samicks. Which is
better is up for discussion, but they are different.

If you want a screaming bargain, you can take a shot at:
http://tinyurl.com/dvkre
Be advised that mine came with uneven frets. Rather than return it, I
had work done on it, mostly covered by warranty and MF giving me a 10%
refund. The result is very nice.
If you're lucky, it'll be good out of the box. If not, you'll need to
return or repair. Good cosmetics, very good tone, very decent pickups.
Drawback: bolt on, and neck joints a couple of frets higher. But
hey, it's only $150.
