inlay popping out - Big Bill - 07:01 12-11-05

I have an inlay standing proud of the fretboard down by the headstock.
Any advice please before I whack it with my rubber hammer?

What guitar is it? I've seen seventies Fender "bullet" truss rod Jazz Bass
necks where the truss rod is trying to escape from the neck via the 1st fret
inlay where the wood is thin.

Steve.

Well, that generally won't really help. Inlays are glued in place, and
simply whacking it down will not replace or re-activate the glue.

If the inlay is simple and is somewhat mobile, you can prepare the
surrounding wood (with a little oil or vaseline) add a drop of Krazy Glue
under the inlay, then hold it down. Note that if the inlay isn't mobile
enough or you don't press it down far enough, you'll have glued it into the
up position.

The inlay may need to be removed to be re-glued properly.

There is, of course, the question of *why* the inlay popped up. On some
guitars, as noted some Fender Jazz Basses with the block inlays, the first
inlay covers the trussrod anchor. That inlay popping can be a symptom of a
much greater problem.

So, some more details might be helpful.

Assuming it's a MOP fingerboard inlay...
Put a couple drops of superglue at the edges.
Hold the inlay down with a block (wax paper-covered)
until glue dries.
Superglue accelerator is wonderful :-)

It's a profile LP copy.

Um. I had this Profile LP copy sent to me from the States and I was
thinking expansion and contraction at different rates as ambient
temperatures varied might account for it.

Is that a serious suggestion? It sounds very problematic.

No the repair guys solution is how you should take care of it.. Dont
use much super glue and get it underneath the inlay. Whatever you do
dont use any oil or vaseline. If that shit gets under the inlay
nothings gonna stick . Hold it down until its dry..Super glue works
best if used sparingly. One drop at the most should suffice.

Yeah, it's serious. It's exactly how I do it.
Most of the time there's a little excess superglue.
Single-edge razor blade. Voila! Done.

You're saying I have to work the inlay right out? At the moment it's
only standing proud, I don't fancy trying to gouge it out.
