Don't try to be nice!!! - Deaf Frets - 02:26 13-11-05

Entertaining people for a living can be a drag. Your job is basically to
make people like you. Because if people don't like you, they will judge
you before they listen to you, and then they will close their ears. This
usually applies unless you are truly awesome, which most of us obviously
aren't. (Follows doesn't it? If we were all awesome, then awesome would be
ordinary)
You also need as many contacts as a boy can possibly have, so you can't
afford to put anybody's nose out of joint. And because there's money
involved, you will get ripped off, you will get used, and taken for a
ride periodically.
There will also inevitably be nights when despite giving an audience all
your heart, you will get ignored, or even rejected outright. Even Hendrix
got bood off stage by 13-14 yo teeny boppers when he was warm up act for
The Monkeys. (Though doubtless many of them might have started to appreciate
his genius as they got older).
After putting in all this effort, trying to be nice to people, trying with
your heart to entertain them, how do u avoid a breakdown after getting
kicked in the face like this?
Simple. Don't try!

Remind the audience that They paid to see You play, so if they
want their money's worth, they better snap out of it.

Here's a better idea. Do your best and be a nice as you can to the
audience. If they DON'T appreciate you, at least you can hold your head up,
and with a clear conscience say "Well, I did MY part." Then move on.

Doesn't everybody?

I suspect the point has been missed. I said don't "try". Trying involves
an effort.
What I meant is: you simply have to be.
I suspect Satchmo cottoned onto this one. Anybody else?

If you mean Louis Armstrong, he most certainly was
_not_ himself in public.

I think "me against the audience" is one of the most hurtful yet most common
mindsets among performers. One of the most helpful things someone told me
years ago was that the audience WANTS to like you (especially a paying
audience). They didn't get all dressed up and shell out the money for a
ticket and babysitter hoping to have a BAD TIME. You'll be much better off
(and a better performer) if you don't see them as adversaries. Also, I heard
Vince Gill say something one time that is a great mindset to have. When
someone asked him if he got nervous before performing the big gigs he said
"well, it'll be good, bad, or somewhere in between". Rarely ever is it truly
"bad" so that gives you a good chance of you doing at least a decent job and
that the audience will like you.

Dude,
It's simple:
The business of rocking is ROCKING.
The business of business is BUSINESS.
If you make ROCKING your BUSINESS, BUSINESS is GOOD.
If you don't get it, you probably won't - case closed.

Almost certainly not. But he was definitely a champ. He was notorious for
giving away his money to people.
