My Strat and first signs of "relic" - Vanessa - 18:35 15-11-05

After a rehearsal last night, I was leaning on my Strat while it was
still slung around my neck and while caressing its rear, I noticed the
first signs of relicing. The finish is starting to "crumple". I'm so proud.
:)

Mind you, its been copping a hell of a bashing lately but that's a good
thing. Right?

Resuming normal transmission.

I was going to make a joke about caressing my wife's rear and noticing
signs of relicing... but I look older than she does (and I'm younger).

But seriously, I love old, weathered Strats. At the rate I'm playing
mine lately, it'll look new forever. (My new band calls for my SG and
Ibanez- big humbucker crunch tones.)

Guitars are made to be played. I don't think of them as investments to
lock away in a vault.

You probably wouldn't feel that way if you paid $50,000 for a pre-CBS
Strat.

I wouldn't, I build my own relics and have all the fun I want with them,
although I do fess up if asked about the origin which is never questioned.
But I do get asked how I can risk taking a "vintage" axe out of the house
and abuse it like I do lol

For some reason, I beat the hell out of my Strat (a MIM) unlike the way
I treat my other guitars. I think that it lends itself to a more
aggressive attack. My Strat certainly has its share of dings and
scratches. It's even showing some wear on the neck. Right now, it needs
a new nut, but can take whatever is dished out to it.

My Jeff Beck Strat has the Olympic White on it. This paint is
formulated to yellow as it ages. I've only had it two years but it
has seen enough play that the paint is wearing on the upper horn where
it touches my shirts. You can see three distinct layers there. The
creamy colour which is the top, a colour somewhere between this and
the original white, and the white. I don't mind it one bit because it
tells me I have a guitar I enjoy playing. Although I have to admit my
LP double-cut runs a very close second if not in a dead heat.

Meant to be played, and meant to be seen. Personally, I think a well-made,
beautiful guitar is a piece of art too. Looks just as good as a fancy
picture up on the wall :)

I treat my guitars like tools. I expect them to perform, and not to be
wussies about it. I'm not overly rough with them, but not overly careful
either.

But then, to me, a shiny new looking guitar is uninteresting. Give me a
beater any day!

For some reason, I can tolerate the wear and tear on my Strat better
than my other guitars, which doesn't really make a lot of sense. I
think it's that I've seen a lot of really worn Strats by different
players and it makes me think that you "earn" that kind of guitar by
playing it a lot. Kind of corny, maybe but WTF.
