Craigslist worked - Jeff - 20:59 15-11-05
|

So I did what someone on here recomended and ran an ad on Craigslist that I
want to get together with some people to form a "lets have fun and learn
together" type band. I got a hit on it from a local player. The guy is
actually from New Orleans but has been displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
However, I have some reservations. I said I want to play blues while
learning. He plays blues, rock and cajun music (Guitar) as well as Zydeco
(Accordian). So here are my reservations.
1. This guy has played the last 5 years in small venues on Bourbon Street,
he says mostly drunk but had a good time. The mostly drunk part dont matter,
the guys got a lot of experience. I OTOH am pretty mediocre. I should note
that the guy says being displaced he just misses jamming and was looking for
someone to jam with locally and would teach me what I need to know.
2. Hes using some good equipment, I OTOH am using an Electromatic, a Roland
Microcube and a Fender G-DEC (Which I plan on returning to get a real Amp)
We have been swapping emails. Family man, like myself. Here is his view:
"Hiya, Jeff.
Anyway, I've played "professionally" (in Bourbon
Street clubs and usually drunk, but having a good time
and didn't get fired) for 5+ years. I'm more creative
than I am proficient, so I consider myself a medicore
guitarist and have no airs about it. For the most
part, I just play to make myself happy and I'm
happiest when I've got people to play music with.
What you don't know, I can show you, and what I don't
know, you can show me. Cajun/Zydeco guitar is pretty
easy to learn and I can clue you in on that. I love
playing old time Zydeco with nothing more than an
accordion (I've got 2 Cajun accordions. 1 that's
tuned in the key of C and another in D) and a guitar.
With so many months gone by with the hurricane, I'm
dying to play again. Let me know when we can get
together."
Theres also talk of Blues, Country Rock, Kentucky Headhunters and others.
SO what would you all do? Hook up and play? Not sure I am up to standard to
be playing with someone who has been playing professionally for the last 5
years.
NOTE: This individual is a former poster to alt.guitar a long time ago, but
his kids took precedence so he hasnt been on the groups in a long time.

I've used Craigslist sucessfully a number of times. There's no real
protocol - it's just people hooking up with people. Hook up - what have
you got to lose? So, you meet, and it either works or doesn't - you met
somebody new...

Go for it. Maybe it won't work out, but at least give it a chance. It
sounds like it could be an interesting experience.

Hell, give him your number, meet up, and jam. Thats what music is all
about. I would KILL to find a good accordian player. If he is good, and it
sounds like it, hes probably as interested in jamming as you are, and its no
big deal to teach people new things. Go for it.

As everyone else has mentioned, meet and play with the guy.. see how it
works out. If you've got nothing to lose and it sounds like everything to
gain. It doesn't look like it's going to be an ego fest, and the guy sounds
like he just like playing.
You learn a lot playing with others. You learn more when playing with folks
that are better than you. Really sounds like a win/win.

Better to have somebody to LEARN from, right? Just be honest that you
may not be up to his level.

I wouldn't worry about quality differences, as long as you can make
yourself be heard.

Go for it! If it doesn't work, it's not much of a loss.

If I were you, I'd get together with him and play. There's no better
way to improve than jamming with people who are better than you. It
doesn't sound like he has an attitude. So go for it. Think of it as an
opportunity to learn while having fun.
The worst thing that could happen is you'll get together and it won't
work out. So what? It's worth a try. I've jammed with a few people I
had nothing in common with, including a jazz pianist who was WAAAYYY
beyond my skill level. There were a few embarrasing moments. But making
mistakes has helped me learn. And so far, the world hasn't ended
whenever I played a wrong note.
In my new band, I'm working with a bassist who doesn't have a lot of
experience. I'm actually enjoying helping him along. I'm watching him
improve each week. Last night we worked on learning Motorhead's "Stone
Dead Forever", which has a lot of heavy bass parts. It was also
recorded about a quarter step below standard pitch. So it was a lot of
work. But it was fun.

Zydeco isn't all that technical; it's more a rhythm thing, and once you get
"plugged in," you may be hooked!
A very good friend of mine, who played piano, Hammond, Minimoog, and string
synth in the rock band I was with for 9 years fulltime, now plays accordion,
unshaven and barefoot, in a 3-piece cajun band down south, and is having the
time of his life.
The 6-string banjo/guitar player in the band doesn't play any real leads
(hell, he can hardly play any chords, the action on that thing is so bad),
but he plays chukka-chukka-chukka parts REAL good. There's no drummer; the
3rd guy plays bass on a strange device called a rhumba box. They absolutely
kick butt!

It's a whole lot of fun, and that in itself is a VERY important thing to
learn in music. I say jump on it!
