Describe WARM tone - Jeff - 19:26 16-11-05

So it occured to me that I see this all the time on here, and today the
Salesman mentioned it at GC. So what exactly does WARM TONE relate to? What
does it mean, if you can describe it. Is there an opposite like Cold Tone?
Or NOT WARM TONE? I already Googled it, not a definition, just people saying
it.

Tone is very subjective and so are the adjectives used to describe it.
What one player considers to be "warm" may not be to another.
A warm tone *to me* is generally the sound produced by a guitar with
humbucking pickups using the neck pickup plugged into a fairly clean
tube amplifier. The tone control on the guitar might be turned down a
bit. The epitome of a warm tone (again - *to me*) can be heard at the
very opening in the recording of Nat King Cole singing "The Christmas
Song."

Usually warm means kind of bassy possibly coupled with slight distortion.
Warren Haynes has a great warm tone, as did Duane Allman. Think neck
humbucker with the tone rolled back. Synonym: creamy
