Hey folks. I've just brought home an 89 Strat. I got it for $400
(Canadian), with another hundred put in to get it playable again - the
frets were heavily grooved.
It's no collector's item, to say the least. My techie guy told me it's
been refinished (fortunately, the colour isn't too annoying, and it's
a fairly well-done finish, all things considered), and it's been
seriously played - the fretboard looks like the pictures I've seen of
old 50s-era strats, but the neck is nice and straight and it's quite
playable (now), so I count myself a happy owner of a new junkyard
Strat.
What I would like to figure out, though, is how far the modifications
went. For one thing, either one or two of the pickups is definitely
not original, cause the bridge has staggered polepieces while the mid
and neck do not - does anyone own a Strat of this year and know which
is likely the non-original stuff? I'm betting on the bridge, both
cause it's outnumbered and because there's no noise cancellation in
the notch position between bridge and mid. It also has Sperzel
locking tuners (three of them missing the locking thingies), and what
appears to be a standard bridge of the time, though I couldn't say.
I googled for it, but the most I could find was a page on serial
numbering conventions, but that didn't tell me much. I'm debating what
I'm gonna do with this - I didn't need another guitar, but I couldn't
turn down a basically sound American Fender at that price. I might
throw a Hot Rails in it and use it in my punk band, or I might try to
find another player to give it a home, though having a spare Strat
around never hurts. I dunno.
Anyways, any info yall have I'm muchly appreciative. If anyone needs
to see it before they can say anything, I can put some pics up on my
webspace, just lemme know - my email above is my spam account, the
real one is at gmail, but I do check both. TIA mangs.
