Opinions please -- I haven't
gone shopping for an acoustic
since '68, when I bought my
'67 Martin D-18 brand-new for
$225. A friend's son asked
for an Ibanez AEF30ETBK for
Christmas and she asked me if
there was something similar
but better in the same price
range. Any opinions one way
or another are welcome --

There are a ton of good guitars for under $500. For that amount, you
can get a solid top and electronics. This would include Takamine,
Ibanez, Washburn, and other brands. In my opinion, the best acoustic
out there for $500-$600 is the Breedlove Atlas series. They are made
in Korea, and are really a fantastic guitar for the price. Good luck
with the process.

Sitting here, I can't give you exact model numbers, but
yes, some of the Ibanez units are actually pretty nice.
My first choice would probably be Seagull, however. Go
to http://www.seagullguitars.com/ if you'd like to see
what they offer.

Ibanez Art Wood series. Solid tops. Made in Korea, NOT China (like
Washburn and many others).

At least one version of those comes with a Baggs iBeam pickup. About as good
a piezo sound as I have heard from a standard model.

Try the A&L brand (Art & Luthier). They sound excellent and are priced
right with solid tops and electronics all for under 500.00. You should
check them out at your local store. The one with a cedar top sounds
wonderful.
