Where can I find Mahagony to build a body? I know Lowes and Home Depot do
not carry anything like that, so where can I get good stock from?

Look in your local phone books yellow pages under hardwood. Theres
different types of mahogany and mahogany look alikes but most of it
came from South America. Since the stupid mother fuckers have clear cut
and burned so much of the rain forest its getting a bit scarce. I dig
mahogany as much as the next man but if they keep it up the U.S.A. may
end up coast to coast desert. Arizona's outta site but ones enough.

A local luthier is now buying Brazilian mahogany rather than Honduran. I got
a nice piece of sapele(African mahogany) from the local cabinet maker. He's
got a supply of Honduran, but he's saving it for antique restoration - he
wouldn't cut me a piece. For the OP, it is worth phoning around the local
cabinet makers, especially those specialising in antique restoration, or
reproduction antiques.

Sapele and Khaya are two varieties of "African" mahogany (neither is a
true mahogany) that have grain structure, color, and physical
characteristics similar to Honduran (aka "Genuine") mahogany. I used
Khaya for the neck, neck block, and heel block of the 5-string acoustic
bass guitar I built earlier this year, and it worked out very well. It's
grain structure is a little coarser than Honduran, and the color is
typically a little lighter, but it's nice stuff.
As an ealier response said, you need to go to a place that specializes
in hardwood lumber. You can look 'em up in the Yellow Pages, the real
ones or online.
You can also find these woods for sale on Ebay, BTW. But Genuine
Mahogany is getting expensive--I paid $8 per board foot for the stuff I
bought last week in Modesto CA. Some hardwood companies are having
trouble getting it at all.

You need to find a local specialty wood supplier. Lowes/Home Depot type
places are the "McDonalds" of lumber - you need to find the fine
European restaurant instead.
Locally, we have a place called Windsor Plywood that sells all kinds of
specialty woods.

At least you can find pine and oak. Here in Taiwan it is impossible to find
mahogany. All the lumber shops sells nothing but luan woods (which looks
like mahogany but it is brittle and weak as hell) and plywood only. When I
asked them where can I find mahogany they said those things dont exist in
Taiwan.

Have a look around the internet (ebay too) for luthier-grade wood
suppliers. That way you'll get wood that has been sufficiently dried for
building a guitar. You'll still want to let the wood acclimate to your
locale.
