highway 1 or fender jap? - tai fu - 23:36 19-11-05

I dont know which one I should get... I can get a Highway 1 strat, or should
I go for a Fender Japanese Ash (with American pickups I think) Strat? Is
there anything about the highway 1 or the Jap strat I should know about? or
should I take out a loan and get the American deluxe instead?

The only thing that I know about the Japaneese Strats is that when the
Fender boys visited the Japaneese operation they teared up.They werent
crying over bad quality. It was because they loved what they saw and
could only dream of the day their American factories could produce the
same fine guitar. The made in Japan jokes died in the mid seventies.
They dont make or sell junk.

American deluxe all the way. The workmanship is awesome. I have a
Mexi-Strat and a Jap Tele. They're both good guitars but if you can
afford it the American is the way to go. You get the alder body vs
poplar and the electronics are better IMHO.

It has been a few months since I was in a shop, here in the states,
that had from Japan, two guitars flying the Fender flag:

a strat

a dual humbucker Jaguar with stop tailpiece

Both in black. Both were new.

The fret work was impeccable, to match overall Quality Control.
No need to level even one fret on either for the lower action I need.
No sharp fret ends. No work necessary on the nut, either the
ends/corners or the slots.

Great sounding. Great playing. Great looking.

Good to Go.

As I haven't seen any others I don't know if they are all having that
much attention paid to them, but those were look no furthers.

I will say I have always had good luck with Japanese Fenders, I have a
Japanese Strat here in yellow with a maple neck which is a lovely
guitar and I much prefer it over the 3 USA Strats I have owned before.
It feels that much more 'right' and has a lovely tone on all settings,
the only Strat I've played to compare with it recently is a new
American Deluxe with S-1 switching so I can also see the poster who
said that American Deluxe Strats are the way to go. Sadly, here in
lovely England Deluxe Strats are the best part of what would be $2000
dollars or so! Maybe it's time to trade in some of the unused amps and
effects :)

My advice:

1) Get on a plane to New York.
2) Buy this guitar, at around 650 Pounds (US$1100):

and enjoy a nice (brief) holiday for less than the cost of the guitar
in the UK.

Or...

Buy the above guitar, and have them (or an agent) ship it to you.

I hear the VAT for England is quite high... if you can have the agent
declare them as gift or something... In Taiwan deluxe strats costs something
like 1200 USD, which is probably closer to their list price. However if I
got it from musicians friend and have an agent ship them to me, then I would
pay shipping to the agent, shipping to Taiwan (which is quite expensive if
you want it to get here in a resonable amount of time) and it will add about
2-300 dollar to the price of the guitar. Then there is the agent fee as
well...

I got an American deluxe amber (alder body)... end of argument. The pickups
and stuff are better, the hardware is much better, and the abalone dot looks
beautiful. Plus its a 2 peice body opposed to 3 peice body on Standard and
highway, and the shop I went to the deluxe only costs like 100 US dollars
more. By the time I am done with Highway's upgrade and mods (especially the
finish), I would be able to buy 2 American Deluxe... and I dont know about
the Japanese because their hardware is mexican level, I am not really sure
wheather or not the pickups are "American", and the trussrod access is in
all the wrong places! (like say the heel)

Just posted in your, "still thinking of modding an import?" thread,
before I saw this.

Hope the new guitar rings all the bells you hoped it would, does it for
you.
