Registering Warranty for a Taylor - Horace Caulk - 23:30 21-11-05

I just recently bought a very slightly used Taylor 314. The warranty
has not yet been registered for this guitar, I have the card. I am
wondering if I could get away with registeing it now. The origional
owner bought it at MF in December of 94. He doesn't have the
origional reciept anymore. Could I get away with filling out the card
and putting on it that I purchased the guitar from MF this month, or
is there some kind of tracking system between MF and Taylor that would
have me found out.

Anyone out there registered a "used" guitar before. Should I do it?

Ummmm, the serial number would tell them when it was made. I doubt they'd
believe it was hanging around unsold for 11 years.

Just enjoy the guitar!

OOps, I made a typo, it was purchased new in Dec of 2004, not 1994.

With the exception listed below, Taylor says the warranty is not
transferable. The warranty expired when the guitar was sold.

And warranty claims require not just registration but also *proof of
original purchase*. Yes, there is a tracking system: the sales receipt or
credit card records. See below.

So I would say, no, you should not.

http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/reference/warranty.html

" With the exception of those limited-edition guitars for which a one-time
transfer of ownership is explicitly written into the Certificate of
Authenticity, an actual Taylor warranty is not transferable from the
original owner to a subsequent owner, and does not cover Taylor guitars
purchased outside the US or Canada, where Taylor distributors assume
responsibility for repairs and service.

[...]

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
TAYLOR warrants solely to the original purchaser of [a] TAYLOR musical
instrument that the instrument purchased shall be free from defects in
materials and workmanship under normal use for as long as the instrument is
owned by the original purchaser, and until the ownership of the instrument
is transferred to another.

[...]

CLAIM PROCEDURES
Unless purchaser is notified in writing that repairs and service under this
Limited Warranty may be made by an authorized TAYLOR dealer or authorized
TAYLOR warranty repair center, claims for warranty performance and service
shall be made by sending the instrument, shipping and insurance prepaid by
the purchaser, to TAYLOR at the address shown on the face of this Limited
Warranty, together with (a) evidence confirming the original purchase by
purchaser (such as a copy of the sales invoice or receipt, a credit card
slip, or the like); "

If it's like most other product manufacturers, warranty cards are a bogus
concept used for personal information gathering, not true warranty
registration.

They almost always require a receipt regardless of any warranty cards filed.

Sure, if you want to go through the hassle of trying to file a warranty
claim, and then having it denied. You're NOT the original purchaser, so why
try being dishonest? Take reasonable care of the instrument, and never need
any warranty work, is the best advice I can give you.

I think you guys are right. That is why I solicited opinions before I
went ahead and did it. Thanks for all your advice.
