How to connect a Roland GP16 to a power amp - Max67 - 17:37 22-11-05

Hello everybody,
I'm trying to find the best way to connect my very old guitar effects
processor Roland GP16 to the Brunetti Silver Bullet power amp; my
question is: do I need to buy also a pre-amp with the send/return
feature and connect the GP16 in a loop, or is better to connect the
GP16 output directly to the power amp? I've been told that the best
way is to use a pre with the Fx in the loop, but I use to play with the
compression and distortion/overdrive of the GP16 so I wonder if the
loop is the solution only if I'd use effects like delay, chorus,
reverb...
Any suggestions? thanks in advance ...

Max,

The owner's manual may help.

Hi Dave,
I have the Italian version, but even in the downloaded English version
the owner's manual explains how to connect the GP16 to more than one
amplifiers, but it doesn't get into that kind of details.
If you want let me know your personal opinion...

>From what info I can find on the net....the Brunetti amp you speak of
is just a pwr amp with no front end of its own. You would just patch
from the output(s) of the GP16 into the pwr amp inputs. Simple as that.
The effects loop trick is for amps with a preamp front end (JCM900,
5150, etc.). Then you'd run the output of the efx unit into the efx
return of the amp, using the rack thingy as the preamp and the other
amp's pwr section.

I have and still use a Roland GP16. I don't care for the overdrive, but
the reverbs/delays are nice. Mine sits in the efx loop just for
occasional delay use.

I know that the Brunetti is only a power amp, infact in my first
message I ask if I need to buy a preamp. What I still haven't
understood is: is better to use the GP16 connecting the output(s) into
the pwr amp or is better to add a preamp that provides the send/return
connections and try to connect the GP16 in the loop? Maybe the choice
depends on the way the GP16 is used, only for reverbs/delays or even
for overdrive/distortion.

It does depend on how you intend to use the GP16. If you want to use
the processor's distortion, put it in front of the power amp (use the
GP16 as a preamp). If you only want to use its effects, you'd need a
preamp to put in front of the GP16 (no loop needed in the pre as you
just run them in line, unless you want FS control over the effect
on-off...then you need a preamp with a footswitchable loop).
