Modern music - Rookie - 21:33 22-11-05

Right now I watch some local version of mtv. During the late hours, they
have many modern "rock" bands like those we often see featured in guitar
mags talking about their equipment and influences and so on.
Well, I am totally disappointed. They all sound dull, like blasting on some
chords and some anemic solos and the whole sound is totally unexciting.
I cannot remember the last time I heard a new band and said "hey, that
sounds interesting".

They're out there, you just gotta dig. MTV is not the place to find 'em,
and, for the most part, the guitar mags promote a lot of crap as well.
If you're looking for good rock, check out The Mars Volta, The Giraffes, and
RX Bandits. Good metal? Check out Mastodon.

I should clarify a bit on RX Bandits. Their first two records pretty much
suck. The third, however, is a thing of beauty. It's called "The
Resignation," and every true rock fan should own a copy.

I dont like MTV, because during the daytime they play nothing but pop/hip
pop that sounded like a MIDI file played with a Creative Sound Blaster FM
synth. Either that or celine dion stuff that makes you want to sleep.

JZ. I doubt you'd know good rock if it came out of the sky and hit you
in the cabeza. Good rock is music that will be remembered and listened
to through the years. The stuff you mentioned aint remembered today
much less 20 years from now.

It really depends on what you like in music.
I think I have been entertained by some of the experimental stuff that
came out of the shoegazer crowd and how that is refinding the art of
song in things like Bloc Party, some great songs done with some
interesting guitar playing and playful use of effects.
I don't like the vocalist but some of the guitar lines by The Strokes
was interesting.
I heard some amazing Bosa Nova stuff on World Cafe last night. And
Robert Plant with the Strange Sensations live was very unique.
There are surprises every where to be had, but I think the key has
always been to listen to everything you possible can.
Good luck and don't worry something is happening out there, you just
have to find it.

Which is what OP Rookie was talking about.
Is it some kind of hardwire communication deficit problem you suffer
from that a newsgroup should know about?

Put a cork in it and and stop defecating on people.
Learn how to really play the guitar.
Look in the mirror and get a real time reality check.
If that combination doesn't ring any bells then enjoy the consolation
prize of the upcoming heart attack and followup stroke.

Mastodon rules!!! =)
as far as modern rock, i think the Strokes and the Killers have
some interesting stuff going on, although i don't like everything
they do.
mtv is certainly not the place to find some of the better bands
out there, they push too much crap from the record companies,
all for people who don't know any better. or don't _want_ to
know any better.
personally, i've been really digging santana's latest two albums.
don't think you could call it rock, but it beats the hell, guitar-wise,
out of most of the rest of it.
oh yeah... i really dig Alter Bridge, too. basically it's Creed, they
just fired the singer and got a new guy. way better guitar, very
good vocals, and Mark Tremonti actually solos. yay!

MTV has *NEVER* been the place to find good rock... at least not the US
version of MTV. (You're somewhere in or near the Balkans, right?)

Yeah. I'm pretty sick of all the Korn-imitators playing one-finger
chords on 7-strings.

The last time I said it was just a week ago. I heard "Your Time Has
Come" of the new Audioslave album. Great riff, great vocals, great solo
(I love how Morello is starting to combine shred licks with his
sound-sculpture approach). The whole album is really good.
Before that, the last song to knock me out was "No One Knows" by Queens
of the Stoneage. So, every 2 or 3 years I stumble across something
exciting in the mainstream. At the same time, I'm also checking out
music sites to find alternative/underground stuff. There's a lot of
interesting metal coming out of the Scandanadian countries that doesn't
get played in the U.S.
