Were American Telecasters ever sold new without a case? -

I am sure that this message is sure to irritate the intolerant, but I
am posting anyway in the case that some kind soul can help me out.

I recently bought a Fender American Telecaster on Ebay (UK), that the
seller claims is 2 years old, 'like new', and with all its original
components. However, it does not come with a Fender case, and the
seller said that when the guitar was purchased, the case was bought
seperately. I have been playing Fender Strats for a couple of years,
and I thought that with the American series, a hard case came as
standard. I have been told to be wary of auctions, as sometimes sellers
strip the more expensive parts off a guitar to sell seperately, so I
hope this has not happened here. Was there ever a time (in recent
years), when American teles were not provided with a case?

Thanks,

QH

American Series/American Standard guitars have always included the case.
Fender ships them with cases however some dealers have been known to break
stock and separate the case from the guitar. In some instances they sell the
guitar for less and upcharge for the case, in most instances they charge the
same for the guitar and upcharge for the case to increase profit. It's
actually illegal in the U.S. but it gets done here anyway.

If you're buying used it's a coin toss and the lack of a case should be
considered in the price. You can pick up aftermarket cases on the cheap and
really the OEM cases from Fender really aren't that great.

I would encourage you to contact Fender customer service, they should be
able to answer the question... and possibly have the fender cases available.

Just my 2¢,

As far as I'm aware they always ship with a case.

However at least one major UK discount outlet sells them without and charges
an extra £50 for a case.

Must be the British version of Guitar Center. That's a *favorite* tactic of
theirs, or used to be.

It might just be the distributor for the U.K. I don't know about
Fender but I ran into this when buying a camera lens in the U.S. The
lens was distributed in the U.S. with a particular filter package as a
separate item and was distributed in Canada with the filter package
included with the lens. Sometime different policies reign in
different economic zones depending on what local practices either do
or don't allow.

It's been done for decades, particularly in smaller markets and before
the large 'superstore'
distributiors such as MARS, GC, etc became common. We often forget how
much info we are now privy to via the Internet, Ebay, etc., whereas not
too many years ago most of us were 'in the dark' , shopping the
classified ads of newpapers for gear, and really beleived what the
local guitar shop owner tried to tell/sell us.

Here in the U. S., Guitar Center does it all the time, although it's kind
of underhanded. Whenever they have a good sale price on a Tele or Strat,
chances are they'll say the case is not included. That's how I bought my
Strat from Guitar Center...I got a good price ($550 for a new Fender Hot
Rodded American Deluxe Double Fat Strat with two Seymour Duncan Humbuckers
in White Blonde over Swamp Ash), but no case.

John E. Golden

They always sell the case with guitar if the manufacturer provides it, hell
I bought a $350 prs se yesterday and they gave me the case. Bought an
American tele a while back and got the case, no questions asked.

They always do?!? I just bought a brand new American Deluxe Strat without
case. They don't always do anything. The dealer knocked $100 off because I
took it in a gig bag (that I already owned)
