Buying guitars off Ebay - how do they do that ? -

1. The thing I am thinking - isnt buying a guitar off ebay kind of
stupid ? You cant hear it, you cant play it. How can you tell how
it will feel or sound? How do people do that ? Or are they all idiots
?

2. I want a Les Paul. I like the Peter Frampton model. I also like
the Black Beautys. Is there a place I can go to see the entire range
of new and used LP's to kind of comparison shop ? That way, I can
kind of find out what I want and then go find it physically

thanks for any info

I've done it, and I don't consider myself to be an idiot.

I've bought four guitars off ebay. Two were local parties that allowed
me to check the guitar before bidding (on one of the two, I never got
around to playing it, bought anyway, and was happy).

Guitar number three was from a "store" that allowed full refund. Guitar
came with a different color pickguard, but seller shipped off the
correct one without hassle and didn't require return of the other.

Guitar number four was a "second." I was able to get a KILLER deal on
it. It came with higher than ideal action, but the price was so low
that I decided to keep it and lower the action myself. (It also had
right to return for full refund).

ALWAYS factor in the risk. Only by ebay when price compensates for
potential hassle. I also advise only to buy when you have the right to
inspect and return for any, or NO reason at all. ...otherwise, search
by distance and PLAY before bidding, with agreement that you come back,
hand him cash, and walk away with the guitar an no "shipping and
handling fees."

You need to use search engines. Try froogle and ebay.

I would never buy a guitar off e-bay either, You can pick up ten of the
same model guitar and have ten opinions. I have to play it before I buy it.
If your looking a new guitar you just have to hit as many shops as you can.
The last guitar I bought I lucked out the two I liked the best were in the
same shop so I picked out an amp I played them back to back for about an
hour I made my choice. It hard to make decision about a guitar in just few
minutes you need at least 30 to 40 minutes.

What Dave said and it goes for mail order as well.

I have bought one guitar off of Ebay and, while it was a good buy and I
received exactly what was described, it was a brand I had only handled
once before and found that it's not quite my taste. Consequently, I
play it, but not as often as I had hoped I would; it's different and
has a great tone but I probably wouldn't have bought it if I hadn't
acted quite so impulsively. But that's all besides the point...

Get out there and find some locally to play and play as many of the
same model as you can get your hands on.

Well, I'd buy something on Ebay if is was a very specific, particular
item that you would be unable to find locally. If it's an oddball
guitar that you just have to have, but are never likely to find
locally, sometimes Ebay is the only choice.

Either that of it the price is really good, sometimes you just take a
chance. If you got a good deal, then you can always sell it if you
don't like it.

Something in this price range (The Les Paul Black Beauty), I don't
think I'd ever buy on Ebay - unless there was a return period. I'd try
a couple of things if I were you:

1) Go to a Guitar Center near you, and see if there is a way they can
check the inventory at other Guitar Centers for the guitar you are
looking for. It's a longshot.

2) Search on the web to see if there are any dealers that have any of
these in stock. I hate to say it, or even mention the name, but I bet
Ed Roman has one of those Black Beautys around (or could locate one for
you).

3) Find out nearby guitar shows, and go to them searching for this
particular guitar.

Of course if you are truely just looking for prices on new and used Les
Pauls in general, try looking at:

For used:

www.craigslist.com

For new :

www.musiciansfriend.com
www.samash.com
www.music123.com

Some of them are.
I bought two guitars off of eBay, but I bid very low and got them dirt
cheap. One was a Greg Bennett Explorer that was brand new in the box but
had a (tiny) finish crack and the other was an SX double hum Strat copy
that Rondo didn't sell anymore that had been upgraded with genuine Duncans.
I also bought an Ibanez Artcore that ended without meeting the reserve.
The seller was local and sold it to me after the auction ended for dirt
cheap.

Don't buy a nice guitar off of eBay. I bought cheap guitars that I ended
up being very pleased with for the money. but if I was paying real money
I would insist on playing it first. This goes doubly true for Gibson,
because it seems to me that they are pretty hit and miss as far as tone
and finish goes.

I have bought around ten guitars off ebay. I am not an idiot. I have
never met a guitar that I could not set up to play the way I like it.
I have also sold many of these back at a heft profit...although not
all. The key is knowing how much to pay and not getting caught up in
the hype. It is also essential to know what brands and specific
guitars you can get at a good price. Gibson and Fender don't come to
mind. Are people that buy from Carvin online idiots? How bout from
Musuicians Friend or anywhere else? Or just ebay? Some people need to
feel a guitar first...I can completely understand that...but not
necessary for me. I have also bought four new cars in my life (out of
five) without test driving them. I guess that would classify me as an
idiot to some.

I don't know. I've bought four guitars off Ebay and my theory is don't pay
more than you can sell it for. The first was a USA Tele with Texas specials
for $410 and it played great and a Dean Avalanche MQ for $169 from a guy
trying to get going with 1 feedback but the price was cheap and it turned
out to be a great guitar after setting the action and fine tuning the
intonation then I went and bought another PRS from a guy, a McCarty goldtop
for $1100 and it turned out to be perfect condition and a nice player and I
turned around and sold it for $1650 and took the $550 and put it towards a
CE-24 I had wanted. You just got to be shrewd like in any business and not
get stupid. Theres allot of great deals on Ebay.

I have also bought several guitars from ebay. No problems whatsoever...

I've bought amps, tools, Harley parts, plants and more off Ebay. Very
few problems.
I've bought two guitars on Ebay. Both arrived exactly as described,
meaning they needed work. Both were bought cheap. By the time I had them
like I wanted, I was still way ahead.
To get each of those guitars, I passed on a lot of others. I spent
several months looking for my MIJ Blackie Strat 57 RI. I wanted a lot of
them, but someone would always want it more, sometimes for stupid
amounts. After a refret, it still came in under a new MIM Strat, plays
like a dream, and sounds great.
Bear in mind there is always hype involved. When Looking at Strats,
they always have "The best sounding pickups I've ever heard!" . That
beat-to-crap-by-some-irresponsible-teenager Fender with worn out frets
is "Already Relic'd!"
If you don't see clear, in focus images on the web page, pass, pass, pass!
