Nah, they just sell CHINESE CRAP for a couple dollars cheaper than
quality goods. I'm not thrilled about transferring our wealth to the
Chinese government.

Looking for a low end Guitar last week I decided to forego the trip to GC
and just use the local one block away. I ended up buying a Peavey by trading
in an accoustic Dreadnought Johnson which was in Brand New condition, still
had the plastic on the pick guard. With the gig bag I got $40 for it. I
added to it and bought the Peavey for $120. Thats the best they could do. No
problem, it served my purposes. OTOH...

I could have just about bought a Squire Strat Pack at GC for close to the
same price. Also, they had the exact same Peavey Raptor for $101. I was
looking at Target tonight and they have a Lyon by Washburn Strat that looks,
feels, plays like one of the better Squire Strats and definitly better than
the Peavey for $97.

If you cant compete, then try something else, its a free market and as for
me, I will buy where the deals are the best, in most cases.

Re: you guys need to read this article - John Shaughnessy - 23:24 04-12-05

It's got nothing to do with big box/mom and pop or "hard sell" techniques
(I've seen all size stores do some seriously goofy attempts at selling):

What it boils down to is this:

1) Guitar Center has decided to cater to beginning/intermediate teenage
metal players ONLY. the fact that I as a pro musician can find something
worthwhile to purchase in there is PURELY incidental. They only carry the 2
most popular bock string sets, a handful of rock guitars and basses, budget
line or import Amps, and toms of electronic gizmos to make you THINK you and
play.

Now you may say "Well there are only a handful of full time players in every
town. How can a store only support them?" True. But what about the church
musicians, semi pros, older part timers, DJs, event promoters, students of
the pros, etc.?It seems to me that most mom and pops I worked at did quite
well at catering to that crowd while selling the occasional starter
instrument, not the other way around.

2) As I said previously, one of my MAJOR triggers is blind obedience to the
rules. When a guy has to get three manager's signatures in triplicate just
to take a shit, You are hampering his ability to do his job and hampering MY
ability to GIVE YOU SOME MONEY, not to mention negotiate a price. As many
have said, if they are going to act even more retarded than they used to, I
have ZERO reason to go there. Instead I'll shop the internet. It's just sad
that I have to.

Oh, and don't think that Ed Roman would turn down a franchise offer. It's
probably just sour grapes because no one will back him.

Once again: if you're still in Beginnerland, the world is your oyster, so to
speak. Every company is killing themselves for your business in the cheapo
guitar "race to the bottom".

Trouble is, 5 years from now you won't be able to find that Signature
Series Tele you have your heart set on in Wal-Mart or even GC.There won't be
any one who can tell you about the features, different wood options, or even
how it plays. You'll wish you had a local store to help you then... Oops,
too late.

I bought an Epi Dot tonight at GC, last week a Fender Blues Jr, 8 weeks ago
a Microcube and I am getting ready to purchase a couple of pedals. I find
that the salesman at GC are not only very knowledgable, but will take the
time to earn your business as well. Bottom line is that you can get ANYTHING
you want at a place like GC, they hire people who know what they are talking
about (for the most part), thier pricing is not only competitive but beats
everyone else hands down (Like Wally World, they price match), they also
have a very liberal return policy and they will still have thier doors open
in 20 years. If you dont shop at GC, its more than likely you dont live near
one. But dont worry, one will be coming to your town soon enough.

haven't played out in at least that long.
lots of good players around here, but mostly blues/R&B/classic rock,
country, hip-hop, or covers.
